In honor of Friday the 13th, I decided to check how many current Midwest League players and coaches wear No. 13. Turns out there are a lot more than I thought there would be.
They are Bowling Green Hot Rods RHP Stayton Thomas, Cedar Rapids Kernels RHP Michael Clevinger, Clinton LumberKings 2B Dillon Hazlett, Fort Wayne RHP Daniel Sarria, Great Lakes Loons OF Joseph Winker, Kane County Cougars SS Michael Antonio, Lake County Captains C Alex Lavisky, Lansing Lugnuts OF Chris Hawkins, Peoria Chiefs manager Casey Kopitzke, Quad Cities River Bandits batting coach Joe Kruzel, West Michigan Whitecaps C Curt Casali and Wisconsin Timber Rattlers SS Yadiel Rivera.
A-Rod in Appleton
Speaking of players who wear No. 13, New York Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez hit his 630th career home run today, moving him into a tie with Ken Griffey Jr. for 5th place on the all-time list.
A-Rod played 65 games with the Appleton Foxes in 1994. He hit .319 with 14 HR, 55 RBI and 16 SB. His Foxes teammates included Raul Ibanez, who hit .312 with 7 HR, 59 RBI and 10 SB in 91 games, and Ryan Franklin, who went 9-6 with a 3.13 ERA and 102 strikeouts in 118 IP.
The Appleton Foxes became the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in 1995, when they moved from Goodland Field to Fox Cities Stadium.
Lugnuts improve to 7-0
The Lansing Lugnuts beat the West Michigan Whitecaps 3-2 yesterday to improve to 7-0, their best start in team history. The Lugnuts are the only undefeated team left in the minor leagues.
RHP Marcus Walden takes the mound for the Lugnuts tonight against Whitecaps lefty Kyle Ryan. The game starts at 6:35 p.m. EST.
Walden pitched in 28 games with the Lugnuts last year, going 6-6 with a 3.24 ERA and 54 strikeouts in 100 IP. Ryan pitched in 24 games with the Whitecaps last year, going 6-10 with a 3.15 ERA and 99 strikeouts in 137 IP.
