Bowling Green Hot Rods RHP Caleb Sampen and Fort Wayne TinCaps infielder Tucupita Marcano respectively were named the Midwest League’s pitcher and offensive player of the week for April 29-May 5.
Sampen made one start during that period, against the Peoria Chiefs on Friday. The right-hander allowed only one hit, struck out eight, and walked none in seven scoreless innings. (I was at that game. You can read my post about it here.) The Tampa Bay Rays farmhand is 2-1 with a 3.76 ERA, 30 strikeouts and 10 walks in 26.1 innings/five starts this season.
In six games last week, Marcano batted .538 (14-for-26) with a triple, a double, two walks, three runs batted in, and a stolen base. The San Diego Padres prospect is batting .306 with six extra-base hits, 13 RBI, and three stolen bases in 28 games this season.
