Chicago Cubs pitcher Yu Darvish looked sharp in his rehab start for the South Bend Cubs on Monday, but the West Michigan Whitecaps rallied for three runs in the 8th inning to win 4-2.
In five innings, Darvish gave up one run (a solo homer by Joey Morgan) on three hits, struck out five, and walked none. It was his first game action since being placed on the disabled list with inflammation in his right triceps in late May.
Miguel Amaya — the South Bend backstop who caught Darvish — drove in both runs for the Cubs. South Bend had a 2-1 lead after seven innings, but West Michigan scored three runs in the next frame and held on for the win. Jose Azocar drove in the tying run before the go-ahead and insurance runs scored after Cubs third baseman Austin Filiere committed a throwing error.
Official attendance for the game was 6,948.
