Chisholm among top D-backs prospects on Cougars roster

Four players ranked among the top 30 Arizona Diamondbacks prospects are on the Kane County Cougars’ Opening Day roster, including returnee Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm.

Chisholm started last season in Kane County, but played in only 29 games before suffering a season-ending torn meniscus in his right knee. (He batted .248 with eight extra-base hits, 12 runs batted in, and three stolen bases in those 29 games.) Despite that setback, the 20-year-old Bahamas native enters this season ranked the fourth-best Diamondbacks prospect by Baseball America. BA says he can be overly aggressive with his powerful swing, but defensively he “has smooth athletic actions at shortstop and a strong arm.” BA adds that Chisholm is “confident, talkative, well-liked by teammates, and clearly enjoys playing the game.”

Third baseman Joey Rose is ranked No. 20 by Baseball America, which says scouts see him as a power-over-hit player and below-average runner who struggles defensively. He did well at the plate in rookie ball last year, batting .312 with nine homers, 15 doubles and 39 RBI in 49 games.

RHP Brian Shaffer, the 2017 Big Ten Pitcher of the Year, is ranked Arizona’s No. 24 prospect by MLB Pipeline. A sixth-round draft pick in 2017, the 21-year-old pitched 24 innings as a pro last year, mostly in the short-season Northwest League. He posted a 3.38 ERA with 26 strikeouts and one walk in 13 appearances (10 starts).

Eudy Ramos, a 22-year-old corner infielder from the Dominican Republic, is ranked Arizona’s No. 28 prospect by MLB Pipeline. He split last season between the Northwest League and the Midwest League, batting .315 in 40 games in the former, but only .218 in 30 games in the latter. He looks to improve his numbers in low Class A in his return to the Cougars.

Here is the complete roster for the Cougars:
