Former Clinton LumberKings infielder Ketel Marte reportedly has agreed to a five-year, $24 million contract extension with the Arizona Diamondbacks, who acquired him in a five-player trade with the Seattle Mariners in November 2016. (All five players involved in that trade are former Midwest Leaguers, as I wrote about here.)
Marte’s extension reportedly includes two option years worth an additional $22 million, making the total deal potentially worth $46 million.
Last year was the Dominican Republic native’s first in the Diamondbacks organization. He split it between the major-league and Triple-A levels. At the MLB level, he batted .260 with 5 HR and 18 RBI in 73 games. In Triple-A, he batted .338 with 6 HR and 41 RBI in 70 games.
Marte played in the Midwest League in 2012 and 2013 (mostly in 2013). He cumulatively batted .304 with 31 runs batted in and 17 stolen bases in 102 games with the LumberKings.
Marte is one of three former LumberKings who are the subjects of bobblehead giveaways at Clinton’s Ashford University Field this coming season. Marte bobbleheads will be given away on August 17. The other two bobblehead giveaways are Kyle Seager (June 8) and James Paxton (July 28).
