The Bowling Green Hot Rods beat the South Bend Cubs 5-0 Saturday to clinch the final Midwest League playoff berth.
It was Bowling Green’s third straight win after losing 10 consecutive games from Aug. 20-30. That losing streak included six losses to the West Michigan Whitecaps and four losses to the Dayton Dragons — two teams also headed to the playoffs.
The Hot Rods will host the TinCaps in Game 1 of their opening-round playoff series Wednesday. Fort Wayne will host Game 2 and, if necessary, Game 3 of the three-game series.
The other three first-round match-ups are the Dragons (Game 1 host) vs. the Whitecaps, the Peoria Chiefs (Game 1 host) vs. the Quad Cities River Bandits, and the Cedar Rapids Kernels (Game 1 host) vs. the Kane County Cougars.
The second round of playoffs, which also features best-of-three series, begins Saturday. The winner of the Hot Rods-TinCaps series will face the winner of the Dragons-Whitecaps series, while the winner of the Chiefs-River Bandits series will play against the winner of the Kernels-Cougars series.
The best-of-five Midwest League Championship Series begins Wednesday, Sept. 13. The Eastern Division team will host the first two games (Sept. 13-14); the Western Division team will host Game 3 on Saturday, Sept. 16, and if necessary, Game 4 on Sept. 17 and Game 5 on Sept. 18.
