Clinton LumberKings infielder Luis Rengifo and former Bowling Green Hot Rods pitcher Ryan Garton were part of a five-player trade between the Seattle Mariners and the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday.
The Rays sent Garton and minor-league catcher Mike Marjama to the Mariners for Rengifo, minor-league LHP Anthony Misiewicz, and a player to be named later.
Rengifo batted .250 with 11 HR, 44 RBI and 29 SB in 102 games with Clinton this season. He tied a franchise record on May 18 by stealing four bases in a game against the Burlington Bees. (Future major-leaguer Alan Wiggins set the Clinton record in 1979. The league record is six, done by Mount Vernon’s Charles Popovich on May 16, 1951.)
Garton has split the last two seasons between Triple-A and the major leagues. He pitched in the Midwest League in 2013, going 4-3 with a 2.44 ERA, eight saves, 62 strikeouts and 34 walks in 40 relief appearances (70 IP) for the Hot Rods.
