Whitecaps clinch first-half Eastern Division title

The West Michigan Whitecaps were rained out Thursday, but they still clinched the first-half Eastern Division title thanks to a Dayton Dragons loss with only three games left in the first half.

The Whitecaps clinched a first-half playoff berth Wednesday and needed only a win or a Dragons loss to grab the division title. They are the only Midwest League team to clinch a playoff berth so far, with only three days left before the All-Star break.

Dayton leads the Eastern Division wild-card race by a game-and-a-half over both the Lansing Lugnuts and the South Bend Cubs. In the Western Division, the first-place Kane County Cougars have a half-game lead over the Cedar Rapids Kernels and a game-and-a-half lead over the Quad Cities River Bandits.
