Fort Wayne TinCaps third baseman Carlos Belen and South Bend Cubs RHP Oscar De La Cruz respectively were named the Midwest League offensive player and pitcher of the week for August 8-14.
In six games during that period, Belen batted .400 (10-for-25) with three home runs and six runs batted in. Overall this season, the San Diego Padres prospect is batting .232 with 10 homers, 22 doubles, seven triples and 58 RBI in 95 games with the TinCaps.
De La Cruz made one start last week, pitching five hitless innings against the Dragons at Dayton’s Fifth Third Field. The Chicago Cubs prospect struck out six, walked one, and hit a batter.
In three Midwest League starts, De La Cruz is 1-0 with a 0.61 ERA (one earned run), 22 strikeouts and three walks in 14.2 innings.
