Cedar Rapids Kernels first baseman Zander Wiel was named the Midwest League Player of the Month for July.
During July, Wiel led the Midwest League in extra-base hits (18), home runs (8), RBI (24) and slugging percentage (.660), while his runs scored (21), total bases (66) and walks (17) were second overall. He batted .310 (31-for-100) and had a nine-game and a 10-game hitting streak.
He also was named the Minnesota Twins Minor League Player of the Month.
Wiel is the second Kernel to earn a Midwest League Player of the Month award this season, after former Cedar Rapids pitcher Randy LeBlanc received the honor for May. He is batting .256 with 13 HR and 62 RBI in 102 games with the Kernels.
