Chicago Cubs centerfielder Dexter Fowler will begin a rehab stint with the South Bend Cubs on Friday.
Fowler has been sidelined with a right hamstring strain since June 18. According to various media reports, he will be South Bend’s designated hitter on Friday and play outfield on Saturday. The Cubs will then evaluate whether Fowler should be activated so he can participate in Tuesday’s MLB All-Star Game.
If Fowler is not ready to be activated at that point, he presumably would stay with South Bend for another game or two. The South Bend Cubs play the Bowling Green Hot Rods at home Friday through Monday before an off-day on Tuesday, followed by a six-game road trip to Clinton and Kane County.
Fowler is batting .290 with 7 HR, 28 RBI and 6 SB in 64 games this season.
