The Chicago Cubs traded former Kane County Cougars outfielder Shawon Dunston Jr. to the San Francisco Giants for cash considerations Thursday.
Dunston Jr. played 96 games with the 2014 Cougars, batting .268 with 2 HR, 37 RBI and 27 SB. He started this season with the High-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans, batting .219 with 5 RBI and 7 SB in 37 games.
Dunston Jr.’s father, former major-leaguer Shawon Dunston, is a member of the Giants coaching staff. He also played in the Midwest League, as a Cubs prospect in 1983.
The elder Dunston was the Midwest League Prospect of the Year that season. He batted .310 with 4 HR, 62 RBI and 58 SB in 117 games with the Quad City Cubs. He also was named MVP of the Midwest League All-Star Game after he tripled and scored the game’s only run.
