Whitecaps’ Szkutnik takes no-hitter into 7th inning

Whitecaps LHP Trent Szkutnik took a no-hitter into the 7th inning against the Dayton Dragons in West Michigan’s 3-2 home win Friday.

Szkutnik retired the leadoff hitter in the 7th before Dragons 2B Hector Vargas reached base on a throwing error by Whitecaps SS David Gonzalez. Szkutnik walked the next batter and then lost both the no-hitter and the shutout when Dragons 1B James Vasquez singled home Vargas.

Szkutnik finished with this pitching line: 6.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 5 K.

Both teams scored once in the 8th inning, giving Dayton a 2-1 lead heading into the 9th. The Whitecaps won in the bottom half when two baserunners scored on a throwing error by Dragons 3B Brantley Bell.
