The Oakland Athletics announced Tuesday that one of their farmhands, right-handed pitcher Sean Murphy, died Monday at age 27. The cause of death had not been revealed as of Tuesday evening.
Murphy pitched for the Burlington Bees in 2011 and 2012. In 23 Midwest League games (14 starts), he went 4-7 with a 3.97 ERA, 86 strikeouts and 27 walks in 93 innings.
Murphy reached Triple-A in 2014, but had not pitched since that year as he rehabbed from an injury that required Tommy John surgery. He was suspended for 50 games in February after testing positive for a drug of abuse.
