The Lake County Captains beat the West Michigan Whitecaps 8-1 Wednesday to become the first Midwest League team with 10 wins this season.
Captains starting pitcher Matt Esparza (W, 2-1) gave up one run on two hits and a walk while striking out seven batters in six innings. Matt Whitehouse and Kieran Lovegrove didn’t allow a hit or a walk in their three innings of relief.
Lake County’s offense was led by designated hitter Francisco Mejia, who went 3-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to nine games. He drove in a run to extend his team-best RBI total to 12. The Dominican Republic native is batting .429 through his first 11 games of the season.
Although the Captains (10-4) have the best record in the Midwest League, three other MWL teams have only one less win: the Kane County Cougars (9-4), the Cedar Rapids Kernels (9-5), and the Fort Wayne TinCaps (9-5).
