Ex-Bees catcher Sal Perez agrees to new 5-year deal with Royals

The Kansas City Royals announced Tuesday they’ve signed former Burlington Bees catcher Salvador Perez to a five-year extension that starts next year.

Perez will receive $52.5 million over the course of the new contract, which runs through the 2021 season. The All-Star catcher and 2015 World Series MVP is currently in the last year of a five-year, $7 million deal that included three club options for the next three years. Perez’s new contract supersedes those club options.

Perez played for the Bees in 2009, batting .189 with six doubles and seven RBI in 36 games. He made his major-league debut for the Royals in 2011 and won Gold Glove awards the past three seasons. Since the start of the 2013 season, the durable backstop has caught an MLB-high 422 games, which doesn’t include the 31 postseason games he caught during that time.
