Quad Cities River Bandits RHP Dean Deetz and Fort Wayne TinCaps RF Franmil Reyes respectively were named the Midwest League pitcher and offensive player of the week for the period of Aug. 31-Sept. 7, the final week of the regular season.
Deetz won the award after giving up only a combined four hits and two walks in 11 scoreless innings in his last two starts (Aug. 31 at Burlington and Sept. 5 at Beloit). He ended the regular season with a scoreless streak of 22.1 innings, dating back to Aug. 19 against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.
In seven Midwest League games (six starts), Deetz allowed only three earned runs (plus two unearned runs). He went 5-1 with a 0.76 ERA, 29 strikeouts and 13 walks in 35.1 innings.
This is the second consecutive week Deetz won the Midwest League pitcher of the week award. (Read about last week’s award here.) He is the first Midwest League player to win the award in back-to-back weeks since Clinton LumberKings RHP Tom Wilhelmsen was named the league’s top pitcher in consecutive weeks in August 2010.
The last River Bandits player to win a weekly award twice in one season was the late Oscar Taveras, who did it in 2011.
In six games during the past week, Reyes batted .560 (14-for-25) with two homers, four doubles, three walks, eight runs batted in, and eight runs scored. He went 5-for-5 with five RBI in Fort Wayne’s season finale, a 17-0 win over the Bowling Green Hot Rods.
Reyes batted .255 with 8 HR and 62 RBI in 123 games with the TinCaps this season.
