Peoria Chiefs outfielder Nick Thompson and Cedar Rapids Kernels RHP Sam Gibbons respectively were named the Midwest League offensive player and pitcher of the week for the period of August 17-23.
In six games during that period, Thompson batted .458 (11-for-24) with two home runs, two doubles, six runs batted in, and five runs scored. His last week was highlighted by back-to-back games against the Beloit Snappers in which he went 7-for-8 with two homers and five runs batted in.
The St. Louis Cardinals farmhand is batting .238 with 11 HR and 52 RBI in 103 games with the Chiefs this season.
Gibbons made the most of his lone start last week, striking out 12 while allowing only one hit and no walks in eight scoreless innings against the Clinton LumberKings on Saturday. He took a perfect game into the 6th inning, but lost it on an infield single with two outs.
The Minnesota Twins prospect is 3-1 with a 1.16 ERA, 31 strikeouts and four walks in 31 innings (four starts) in August. Overall this season, he is 7-3 with a 2.72 ERA, 63 strikeouts and 20 walks in 79.1 innings (13 starts) for the Kernels.
