I usually don’t devote a blog post to a day’s entire slate of Midwest League games, but when I do, it’s because a lot of notable things happened that day. Here’s a look at Wednesday’s MWL action:
Great Lakes Loons 6, Kane County Cougars 2
Loons DH Jimmy Allen went 3-for-5 with a grand slam to lead Great Lakes to victory at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Loons LF Nick Sell, playing in only his third Midwest League game, went 5-for-5 with a run batted in.
Loons RHP Tommy Bergjans earned his first MWL win by giving up only three hits while striking out four and walking none in five scoreless innings.
Peoria Chiefs 7, Dayton Dragons 0
The Chiefs scored twice in each of the first three innings and once in the 8th to beat the Dragons at Fifth Third Field. The win was Peoria’s 13th shutout of the season.
Chiefs RHP Jack Flaherty improved to 7-1 with a 2.52 ERA after scattering six hits and three walks while striking out eight batters in 6.1 innings. Chiefs 2B Andrew Sohn went 3-for-5 with a run batted in.
Bowling Green Hot Rods 2, Burlington Bees 1
The Hot Rods rallied for two runs in the 7th inning to beat the Bees at Bowling Green Ballpark. Bees RHP Austin Robichaux got a no-decision despite giving up only one hit and two walks in six scoreless innings.
Lake County Captains 6, Cedar Rapids Kernels 3
Captains 1B Bobby Bradley blasted his league-leading 21st home run (a three-run shot) and Captains DH Anthony Santander hit a two-run homer to lead Lake County to victory at Classic Park.
South Bend Cubs 2, Beloit Snappers 1
Cubs 3B Matt Rose hit his first MWL homer, a solo shot, in South Bend’s win at Pohlman Field. Cubs RHP Trevor Clifton got the win, striking out seven while scattering three hits and two walks in six innings. Snappers CF Justin Higley hit a solo homer and stole a base.
Fort Wayne TinCaps 2, Quad Cities River Bandits 0
The TinCaps continued their hot streak by winning their fourth game in a row and ninth consecutive home game. The win was their 12th in their last 14 games, and their eighth shutout of the season.
TinCaps RHP Pete Kelich got the win after giving up only three hits and one walk in five scoreless innings. He struck out two batters.
Clinton LumberKings 6, Lansing Lugnuts 5 (11 innings)
The Lugnuts rallied for a run in the top of the 9th to force extra innings, but the LumberKings won on a run scored on CF Austin Cousino’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 11th inning at Ashford University Field.
Lugnuts CF D.J. Davis reached base five times, on two hits and three walks. He drove in a run and stole a base.
West Michigan Whitecaps 3, Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 2 (11 innings)
The Whitecaps rallied for two runs in the top of the 9th and a run in the top of the 11th to beat the Timber Rattlers at Fox Cities Stadium. Whitecaps DH Christin Stewart’s RBI double was the game-winning hit.
