The Miami Marlins reportedly have traded RHP Mat Latos, first baseman/outfielder Michael Morse and a compensation pick to the Los Angeles Dodgers for three prospects.
Latos pitched in the Midwest League in 2008 and 2009. In 2008 he made seven appearances (five starts) for the Fort Wayne Wizards, going 0-3 with a 3.28 ERA, 23 strikeouts and eight walks in 24.2 innings. The Wizards were renamed the TinCaps during the offseason before Latos returned to Fort Wayne for the start of the 2009 season. He started two of his four appearances with the 2009 TinCaps, and went 3-0 with a 0.36 ERA, 27 strikeouts and three walks in 25.1 innings before splitting the rest of the season between the San Diego Padres and their Double-A team.
As I write this, it is unknown who the three prospects involved in the trade are. I will update this post when that information becomes public, as there is a good chance at least one of the prospects will be a former Midwest Leaguer because the Great Lakes Loons have been the Dodgers’ Low-A affiliate since 2007. Some reports say all three prospects are pitchers, but most are not specific about the players’ positions.
In the meantime, here’s an uncredited photo I found of Latos pitching at Memorial Stadium, which was the home of the Fort Wayne Wizards from 1993 to 2008.
