South Bend Cubs outfielder Jeffrey Baez and Bowling Green Hot Rods RHP Yonny Chirinos respectively were named the Midwest League offensive player and pitcher of the week for the period of July 13-19.
During that time, Baez went 14-for-26 (.538) with three home runs, 10 runs batted in, eight runs scored, and two stolen bases. Through Sunday, he is batting .224 with 5 HR, 19 RBI and 15 SB in 64 games this season.
Baez played part of last season in the Midwest League, batting .236 with 6 HR and 15 RBI in 31 games with the Kane County Cougars.
Chirinos has made two starts for the Hot Rods, including one during the specified period. On July 13 at West Michigan, he gave up only one hit and one walk while striking out four batters in six innings. In 29 innings spread across three Class A levels (short-season, full-season and advanced) this year, he is 3-0 with a 0.31 ERA, 25 strikeouts and four walks.
