The Arizona Diamondbacks traded their top pick from last year’s draft, RHP Touki Toussaint, to the Atlanta Braves on Saturday — the pitcher’s 19th birthday.
Toussaint pitched for the Kane County Cougars this season, as recently as Friday. In his seven Midwest League starts, he went 2-2 with a 3.69 ERA, 29 strikeouts and 15 walks in 39 innings. MiLB.com ran a story about his development a few days ago, which you can read here.
Toussaint was traded with veteran pitcher Bronson Arroyo, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, in exchange for 26-year-old utility player Phil Gosselin. The trade is widely viewed as the Diamondbacks dumping Arroyo’s salary on the Braves. Arroyo is making $9.5 million this year and has an option for 2016 worth $13 million (with a $4.5 million buyout if it’s not picked up). He is expected back in August at the earliest. Gosselin also is sidelined, expected to be out about four more weeks with a broken thumb.
