The Great Lakes Loons lost to the Lansing Lugnuts tonight, but they still clinched the Eastern Division first-half wild-card spot because the Lake County Captains lost their game, too.
The entire field of first-half entrants for the Midwest League postseason is known now. The Lugnuts won the Eastern Division first-half title. The Quad Cities River Bandits won the Western Division first-half title, and the Cedar Rapids Kernels are the Western Division first-half wild-card team.
Tomorrow is the final day of the first half. The second half begins Thursday, two days after the Midwest League All-Star Game is played at Peoria’s Dozer Park.
Martinez hired as M’s hitting coach
Former All-Star player and two-time American League batting champion Edgar Martinez was hired Saturday to be the new hitting coach of the Seattle Mariners. The team currently has the worst batting average (.233) in the major leagues.
Martinez played in the Midwest League in 1984, when he batted .303 with 15 HR and 66 RBI in 126 games with the Wausau Timbers. (The Timbers moved to Geneva, Illinois, and became the Kane County Cougars in 1991.)
