Peoria Chiefs LHP Austin Gomber and Cedar Rapids Kernels outfielder Max Murphy were respectively named the Midwest League pitcher and offensive player of the week for the period of May 4-10.
In his one start during that period, Gomber allowed only four hits in eight scoreless innings against the Clinton LumberKings. He struck out seven batters and walked none.
Gomber is 2-3 with a 3.52 ERA, 28 strikeouts and five walks in 30.2 innings (five starts) this season. He has a 0.98 WHIP and opponents are batting .221 against him. His next scheduled start is Tuesday night at Cedar Rapids.
Murphy batted .400 (10-for-25) with a home run, a triple, two doubles and nine RBI in his past six games. Overall this season he is batting .250 with a home run and 13 RBI in 26 games.
