Midwest League alumni Albert Almora and Dee Gordon each turned in a 5-for-5 performance Saturday.
Almora’s five hits and an RBI led the Tennessee Smokies to a 7-1 win over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. The Chicago Cubs prospect batted .329 with 3 HR and 23 RBI in 61 games with the 2013 Kane County Cougars.
Gordon’s five hits and 3 RBI came in a losing effort as his Miami Marlins fell 5-4 to the New York Mets. As a Los Angeles Dodgers prospect in 2009, Gordon batted .301 with 3 HR, 35 RBI and 73 SB in 131 games with the Great Lakes Loons. He is the half-brother of current Cedar Rapids Kernels SS Nick Gordon, a top Minnesota Twins prospect.
Only four Midwest League teams collected more than the combined 10 hits of Almora and Gordon on Saturday.
The Peoria Chiefs used 16 hits and seven walks to beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 15-4. Chiefs leadoff hitter Magneuris Sierra had three hits, including a triple. SS Andrew Sohn, LF Nick Thompson, 1B Justin Ringo, DH Collin Radack and RF Blake Drake each had a pair of hits. Sohn drove in four runs and Ringo drove in three.
The West Michigan Whitecaps used 12 hits, two walks and four errors to beat the Fort Wayne TinCaps 10-6. Whitecaps DH Will Maddox went 4-for-4 and RF Michael Gerber drove in four runs.
The Dayton Dragons used 12 hits, five walks and an error to beat the Lansing Lugnuts 9-3. Four Dragons players had two hits, including 3B Gavin LaValley, who drove in three runs.
The Bowling Green Hot Rods used 11 hits and two walks to beat the Lake County Captains 4-3. Hot Rods SS Cristian Toribio led the way with three hits and a run batted in.
