Cleveland Indians RHP Corey Kluber narrowly edged out Seattle Mariners RHP Felix Hernandez to win his first Cy Young Award on Wednesday.
The 30 first-place votes were split between the two American League hurlers — 17 for Kluber and 13 for King Felix. Kluber netted 169 overall points, 10 more than Hernandez. Chicago White Sox LHP Chris Sale finished third with 78 points.
Kluber went 18-9 with a 2.44 ERA, 1.095 WHIP, 268 strikeouts and 51 walks in 235.2 IP. He pitched for the Midwest League’s Fort Wayne Wizards in 2008, going 4-3 with a 3.21 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 56 IP. He was a San Diego Padres farmhand at that time.
Hernandez went 15-6 with a 2.14 ERA, 0.915 WHIP, 248 strikeouts and 46 walks in 236 IP. He briefly pitched in the Midwest League, starting two games for the 2003 Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. He struck out 18 batters in 14 IP.
Sale went 12-4 with a 2.17 ERA, 0.966 WHIP, 208 strikeouts and 39 walks in 174 IP.
