Lake County Captains LHP Luis Lugo and Fort Wayne TinCaps OF Nick Schulz were respectively named the Midwest League pitcher and offensive player of the week for the period of Aug. 25-Sept. 1.
Lugo started two games during that period. The first game was against the Lugnuts in Lansing; Lugo gave up five hits and a walk while striking out four in five scoreless innings. The second game was at home versus the Dayton Dragons; Lugo gave up only two hits (no walks) while striking out five in six scoreless innings.
Overall this season, Lugo went 10-9 with a 4.92 ERA and 146 strikeouts in 126.1 IP for the Captains. He finished strong, going 5-0 with a 2.14 ERA in August. His 146 strikeouts were good for third-most in the Midwest League this year, behind only TinCaps RHP Kyle Lloyd (155) and Whitecaps LHP Kevin Ziomek (152).
Schulz also ended the regular season on a high note, batting .500 (13-for-26) with 2 HR and 8 RBI in his last eight games. Last Tuesday he went 5-for-5 with 2 HR and 6 RBI against the Bowling Green Hot Rods.
Schulz batted .341 with 8 HR and 30 RBI in 49 games with the TinCaps. He joined Fort Wayne in late July after playing 12 games in the short-season Northwest League.
