It took until the final day of the regular season, but the Midwest League playoff picture is finally complete after the Fort Wayne TinCaps claimed the Eastern Division’s second-half wild-card spot.
The TinCaps led the wild-card standings by a half-game heading into Monday’s action, and clinched the final MWL playoff berth with a 4-0 win over the Bowling Green Hot Rods. The game was scoreless until 2B Josh VanMeter hit a three-run homer in the top of the 7th inning. He hadn’t homered since May 29.
The two starting pitchers — RHP Ronald Herrera for the TinCaps and LHP Ben Griset for the Hot Rods — posted identical lines: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K.
The TinCaps host the West Michigan Whitecaps for the start of their playoff series on Wednesday. The other MWL playoff games scheduled for Wednesday are: South Bend Silver Hawks at Lake County Captains; Kane County Cougars at Wisconsin Timber Rattlers; and Burlington Bees at Cedar Rapids Kernels.
