There were two big offensive performances in the Midwest League on Saturday, and both featured a pair of home runs.
Cedar Rapids Kernels 3B Bryan Haar drove in seven runs via a grand slam and a three-run homer. He hit both homers off Clinton LumberKings SP Carlos Misell, who lasted only two outs into the 2nd inning. The Kernels beat the LumberKings 9-5 in the rain-shortened game, which was called after a 30-minute rain delay with one out in the top of the 7th inning.
Kane County Cougars C Kyle Schwarber continued the hot streak he’s been on since his professional career began earlier this month. He drove in five runs via two home runs, including a grand slam in the 7th inning. His 4-for-5 performance also included a double and a single.
The Cougars beat the Beloit Snappers 10-2.
Schwarber has played in 14 games (nine with the Cougars and five with the short-season Boise Hawks), batting .520 with 8 HR and 19 RBI.
Beeler, Polanco make MLB debuts
Former Peoria Chiefs pitcher Dallas Beeler was impressive in his major-league debut for the Chicago Cubs on Saturday, giving up only one unearned run on four hits and three walks while striking out six batters in six innings against the Washington Nationals. He threw 91 pitches; 54 were strikes.
He also collected his first major-league hit (a single in the 3rd inning) and picked Denard Span off first base in the 6th inning.
Beeler went 1-1 with a 1.66 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 43.1 IP (11 starts/12 games) for the 2011 Chiefs.
Former Cedar Rapids Kernels infielder Jorge Polanco made his major-league debut for the Minnesota Twins on Thursday, walking and scoring as a pinch-hitter against the Los Angeles Angels.
On Friday he got his first major-league hit, a two-run triple in the 9th inning against the Texas Rangers.
Polanco played the entire 2013 season with the Kernels, batting .308 with 5 HR and 78 RBI in 115 games. He played 72 games with the High-A Fort Myers Miracle this season before his promotion to the big-league team.
