Weekend Edition: Nov. 15-17

Some quick hits before I check out for the weekend:

The Beloit Snappers announced their 2014 coaching staff this week. All three coaches — manager Rick Magnante, pitching coach Jimmy Escalante and hitting coach Lloyd Turner — are new to the Snappers, but Escalante has coached in the Midwest League previously, for the Burlington Bees and the Kane County Cougars when they were affiliated with the Oakland A’s (as Beloit is currently). Read more about them here.

Three other Midwest League teams previously announced their 2014 coaching staffs — the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, the Peoria Chiefs and the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Click on the team names to read my posts about who their coaches will be next year.

Speaking of the Timber Rattlers, radio broadcaster Chris Mehring has a “Flashback Friday” story today about Alex Rodriguez starting his pro career with the Appleton Foxes in 1994. You can read it here. A-Rod batted .319 with 14 HR, 55 RBI and 16 SB in 65 games for the then-Seattle Mariners affiliate, which changed its name to the Timber Rattlers the following season to coincide with the team’s move from Goodland Field to Fox Cities Stadium.

Among the first-time World Series winners this year is Boston Red Sox RHP Jake Peavy, who pitched for the 2000 Fort Wayne Wizards (13-8, 2.90 ERA, 164 Ks in 133.2 IP). He apparently enjoyed Boston’s World Championship parade so much that he purchased the duck boat he rode in during it. Here’s a photo of him standing in front of it, courtesy of a Red Sox tweet:

The Minnesota Twins made news earlier this week when they announced that All-Star catcher Joe Mauer will move to first base on a full-time basis next season. His 2013 season was cut short by a concussion he suffered in August. He played in the Midwest League in 2002, batting .302 with 4 HR and 62 RBI in 110 games with the Quad City River Bandits.

Make sure to check back here Monday to see the new River Bandits logos, which are being unveiled that day.
