Chiefs, Kernels announce coaching staffs for 2014 season

The Peoria Chiefs and the Cedar Rapids Kernels announced their 2014 coaching staffs this week.

The Chiefs will have a new manager who is no stranger to the Midwest League. Skipper Joe Kruzel was the hitting coach for the Quad Cities River Bandits from 2008 to 2012. The River Bandits were affiliated with the St. Louis Cardinals during Kruzel’s tenure with them; the Chiefs currently are the Cardinals’ Midwest League affiliate.

Peoria’s pitching and hitting coaches — former MLB players Jason Simontacchi and Erik Pappas, respectively — will return from the 2013 field staff.

Jake Mauer will be back in the Midwest League next year for his second season as manager of the Kernels. In 2013 he led Cedar Rapids to the best regular-season record in the league (88-50) and a playoff berth.

Mauer spent a season in the Midwest League as a player, batting .226 with 20 RBI in 84 games with the 2002 Quad City River Bandits. His brother Joe was one of his MWL teammates.

Rounding out the Kernels field staff are Tommy Watkins, who returns as hitting coach, and Ivan Arteaga, who is the new pitching coach.

Cedar Rapids is affiliated with the Minnesota Twins.
