More former Midwest Leaguers on the move (and other news)

Two more former Midwest League players were traded before today’s deadline: RHP Kyle Smith and RHP Matt Stites. (Read my related posts here and here.)

The Royals traded Smith to the Astros for OF Justin Maxwell. Smith pitched for the Kane County Cougars last year, going 4-3 with a 2.94 ERA and 87 strikeouts in 67.1 IP.

The Padres traded Stites, LHP Joe Thatcher and a draft pick to the Diamondbacks for RHP Ian Kennedy. Stites pitched for the Fort Wayne TinCaps last year, going 2-0 with a 0.74 ERA, 13 saves and 60 strikeouts in 48.2 IP.

In other Midwest League-related news…

… The Cardinals promoted infielder Jacob Wilson from the Peoria Chiefs to the High-A Palm Beach Cardinals, promoted reliever Zach Russell from the Peoria Chiefs to the Double-A Springfield Cardinals, and assigned 2013 draftee Mike Mayers (a right-handed pitcher) and 2012 draft pick Bruce Caldwell (an infielder) to the Peoria Chiefs.

Wilson hit .264 with 15 HR and 72 RBI in 97 games with the Chiefs. Russell posted a 0.82 ERA with five saves, 17 strikeouts and two walks in 11 IP for the Chiefs. Russell previously pitched in the Midwest League as a starter, going 7-10 with a 4.21 ERA, 98 strikeouts and 61 walks in 113.1 IP (23 starts) for the 2011 Quad Cities River Bandits.

… The Padres promoted catching prospect Austin Hedges from High-A Lake Elsinore to Double-A San Antonio. Hedges played with the Fort Wayne TinCaps last year, hitting .279 with 10 HR, 56 RBI and 14 SB in 96 games. He is considered one of the top catching prospects in baseball, sporting a strong, accurate arm that threw out 32 percent of the players who ran against him in the Midwest League.

… Indians RHP Josh Tomlin will make a rehab appearance with the Lake County Captains tomorrow night. He pitched for the Captains in 2007, when the team was part of the South Atlantic League.

… Finally, check out the Nancy Faust bobblehead the Kane County Cougars will give to the first 1,500 fans at their Sunday, Aug. 11, game:

Nancy Faust bobblehead

There aren’t many bobblehead likenesses of ballpark organists out there, but Faust is no ordinary ballpark organist. The Chicago baseball icon was the organist for the White Sox from 1970 to 2010 and now performs during select Sunday games at Kane County’s Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.
