During my drive home from Fort Wayne yesterday, I made a quick stop in South Bend to get out of my car and stretch, as well as take another look at Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium, home of the South Bend Silver Hawks.
Longtime readers of this blog may recall that I went to a couple games at Coveleski Stadium — affectionately referred to by some as “The Cove” — last month. (It was the fifth Midwest League ballpark I visited this summer; since then I’ve visited five more of the 16 MWL stadiums.) A month ago, major renovation work was evident on the outfield side of The Cove:
Now the fences that surrounded the work areas are gone, piles of dirt have been replaced by landscaping, and the new centerfield entrance looks like this:
I peered inside the park and saw that the outfield concourse is now open, which means fans can walk all the way around the interior of the ballpark. I’m looking forward to using it when I go to another game at The Cove during the first weekend of August on my way home from seeing the Great Lakes Loons in Midland, Mich.
