The San Diego Padres announced today that former major-leaguer Jose Valentin will be their first-base coach next season.

Valentin managed the Fort Wayne TinCaps the past two seasons, leading them to the playoffs both years. The TinCaps lost to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in the Midwest League Championship Series in 2012; the South Bend Silver Hawks eliminated them from the postseason in the second round this year.

Valentin’s two TinCaps teams collectively went 141-138 in the regular season. He was named Low-A Manager of the Year by Baseball America in 2012.

The Padres also promoted first-base coach Dave Roberts to bench coach, the position vacated by Rick Renteria when he accepted the Chicago Cubs managerial job. Renteria earned the Midwest League Manager of the Year Award when he was skipper of the Kane County Cougars in 1999.

  1. Gosh, it sure makes me feel old to see these guys I watched as a kid being named as managers. At this point, I should probably go yell at someone to get off my lawn.
