The Oakland Athletics acquired INF Jed Lowrie and RHP Fernando Rodriguez from the Houston Astros today for 1B Chris Carter, RHP Brad Peacock and C Max Stassi. Rodriguez and Stassi played in the Midwest League.
Rodriguez pitched for the 2005 Cedar Rapids Kernels, posting an 8-10 record with a 4.18 ERA, four complete games and 128 strikeouts in 157.1 IP. Stassi batted .229 with 13 HR and 51 RBI in 110 games with the 2010 Kane County Cougars.
Former D-backs righty Webb retires
Former National League Cy Young Award winner Brandon Webb has decided to retire, his agent told various baseball sources today. He pitched for the Arizona Diamondbacks all seven seasons of his major-league career.
Webb was very good from 2006 to 2008 — he won the NL Cy Young Award the first year and finished second the next two — but he suffered a shoulder injury during his first start of the 2009 season and hadn’t pitched in the major leagues since then.
Webb pitched in 12 games for the 2000 South Bend Silver Hawks, notching two saves and striking out 18 batters in 16.2 IP. His ERA was 3.24.
Snowbound Victory Field
It’s not in the Midwest League, but that’s OK because it’s snowbound! Hat tip to Twitter follower Andrew Golinvaux, who sent me this photo of Victory Field, home of the Indianapolis Indians.
Victory Field is a beautiful ballpark that I highly recommend visiting. You can see some of my photos of the stadium here.
