MWL playoffs recap: Thompson’s 10K performance highlights T-Rats’ win

Wisconsin Timber Rattlers SP Chad Thompson

In a game filled with highlight-reel moments for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, SP Chad Thompson’s 10 strikeouts in six innings surely was the highlight. But SS Yadiel Rivera’s 4-RBI game was pretty impressive, too.

The Timber Rattlers beat the LumberKings 9-1 in Clinton, with all of Wisconsin’s offense coming in the 4th and 5th innings. They scored four runs in the 4th and five runs in the 5th. Rivera and DH Mike Garza hit back-to-back homers in the top of the 4th off LumberKings SP Rusty Shellhorn. 1B Nick Ramirez hit a 2-RBI double off Shellhorn in the top of the 5th.

Wisconsin’s pitching dominated Clinton batters. In addition to his 10 strikeouts, Thompson held the LumberKings to four hits and one run, a solo homer by 2B Dan Paolini. RP Stosh Wawrzasek struck out four and gave up one hit and two walks in two scoreless innings. RP Santo Manzanillo shut down Clinton in the 9th, striking out two in a 1-2-3 inning.

Shellhorn lasted only 4.1 innings and gave up eight runs on eight hits. He struck out four and didn’t walk any batters.

Meanwhile, in Fort Wayne, the TinCaps beat the Captains 4-3 to take the first game of the best-of-three Eastern Division Championship Series. Fort Wayne’s Yeison Asencio and Duanel Jones each drove in a pair of runs. Lake County’s Jose Ramirez and Francisco Lindor each homered.
