MWL playoffs recap: Timber Rattlers, LumberKings advance

Timber Rattlers LF Ben McMahan connects with a pitch during a game late last month. He homered against the Bees last night.

The second round of the Midwest League playoffs is set after the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and the Clinton LumberKings won their respective games Friday. They will face each other in the Western Division Championship Series starting tonight, while the Lake County Captains and the Fort Wayne TinCaps face off in the Eastern Division Championship Series.

The Timber Rattlers eliminated the Burlington Bees with a 3-0 win in Game 3 of their series, behind a clutch pitching performance by David Goforth. The Rattlers righty went the distance, striking out a career-high nine batters while giving up only four hits and two walks.

Ben McMahan and Nick Ramirez hit back-to-back solo homers in the 4th inning.

Meanwhile, the LumberKings needed 10 innings to eliminate the Beloit Snappers, beating them 4-1 after being deadlocked at 1-1 since the end of the 1st inning. Clinton scored three runs in the top of the 10th inning on a solo homer by Guillermo Pimentel and a 2-run single by Dan Paolini.

The Captains and the TinCaps eliminated their opponents Thursday.

Tonight’s pitching matchups, starting with the Western Division Championship Series because I’ll be in Clinton watching that game:

Timber Rattlers RHP Chad Thompson (5-2, 4.31 ERA, 74 Ks in 85.2 IP) vs. LumberKings LHP Rusty Shellhorn (3-1, 3.60 ERA, 18 Ks in 25 IP)

Captains LHP Shawn Morimando (7-6, 3.59 ERA, 69 Ks in 110.1 IP) vs.  TinCaps LHP Frank Garces (9-6, 2.81 ERA, 112 Ks in 121.2 IP)
